Today I went to the Wahiawa Botanical Gardens. It dates back to the 1920s when the land was used by sugar planters as an experimental arboretum. It was a relaxing adventure, pretty stuff. Then I stopped and walked around the Dole Plantation. I got swindled into the Maui Divers thing. I've done it before but what the hell...I got a free spin which resulted in a 60% of the pick an oyster experience-so it cost me like $5 to pick an oyster. Got a good size pearl and here's where things get expensive....to find a setting:) Found a pretty turtle setting for a necklace. Won't mention the cost cuz the plan is to give it to mom:) Since I picked a setting I got a free oyster (you see how they work now LOL). Well this oyster gave me 2 decent size pearls...but I stopped there. No settings for them...I'll go back later (that place has a 10% military discount). After spending more money that I wanted, I headed to Pupukea to check out a heiau.
Hawaiian heiau (temple site) is sacred ground. They were/are places of great spiritual power. The one in Pupukea is the largest one. Pu'uomahuka dates back to the 12th century. In 1793, English soldiers who went ashore to get water were captured by Hawaiins, killed and sacrificed on the altar. It is said that when the the temple was dedicated the bodies of victims who had broken the laws were burned on the altar.
So that's that:) Tomorrow Mom and I are going to the swap meet and possible picking up her new car!
